New $500 monthly housing allowance for survivors of domestic violence

file-page1-2

The City of Toronto is participating in Survivors of Domestic Violence – Toronto Portable Housing Allowance Program. On behalf of the Province, the City is providing a $500 monthly housing allowance to help about 320 qualified Toronto households make their rent more affordable. In addition to this allowance, households living in a shelter or transitional housing may be eligible for a one-time payment of up to $2,500 to cover costs for first and last month’s rent.

Funding is available to March 31, 2018.

To be eligible, households must

  • currently live in Toronto
  • meet Rent-Geared-to-Income eligibility
  • have been approved for the Special Priority Housing Category by Housing Connections
  • have established a new address and are permanently separated from the abuser, or are in a shelter, transitional or temporary housing, or reside with their abuser and plan to separate from them

Starting January 2017, agencies with eligible clients can refer them to Housing Connections. There are about 320 allowances available. This allowance is paid to the tenant, not the landlord.

Applications will continue to be accepted until all allowances are allocated.

Applications will be reviewed to determine if basic eligibility criteria are met, as outlined in the Frequently Asked Questions. Housing Connections will mail an application to eligible households. Completed applications must be returned immediately to activate the housing benefit.

During the first six months of the program, the household application will be inactive on the centralized waiting list. To reactive the application and to appear on the centralized waiting list, a request must be made in writing.

How to apply

If you are in a shelter or transitional housing or receiving support services, connect with your housing worker or support person to complete the referral process. If you are no longer in contact with a worker, Housing Connections is available, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 am–12 pm to provide assistance and answer questions.

Anyone thinking they may qualify or wanting more information can contact Housing Connections.
